One-dimensional prominence threads. I. Equilibrium models

Threads are the building blocks of solar prominences and very often show longitudinal oscillatory motions that strongly attenuated with time. The damping mechanism responsible for reported oscillations is not fully understood yet. To understand prominence threads it mandatory to investigate first nature equilibrium solutions arise under static conditions presence radiative losses, thermal conduction background heating. This provides basis calculate eigenmodes thread models. nonlinear ordinary differential equations hydrostatic gravity solved using standard numerical techniques simple analytical expressions derived certain approximations. represent a thread, i.e., dense cold plasma region length connects corona through transition (PCTR). can also match chromospheric-like layer if spatially dependent heating function localised around footpoints considered. We have obtained representing investigated in detail dependence these on different parameters model. Among other results, we shown multiple condensations along magnetic field line possible, effect partial ionisation model significantly modify balance therefore their length. last parameter be comparable observations when losses reduced typical temperatures.
